I hate using things as Whatsapp or Facebook, but there are good things about those in these kind of circumstances, like talking to part your family which is in some other country, with a flat rate (or free if you have free wi fi in the hotel, which you will probably have in the lobby of the hotel). Then again, consider that if you place another sim your number will change, and the first thing to do is let your family know your number while you are traveling

also, since you probably want to use the GPS and that depends on your data plan to download the maps, and you don’t know if your sim card has enough data (you probably will send photos and short videos to your family and friends, and that consumes data), you may want to download the maps before the travel. Here maps (which is was used to be installed in Nokia phones) is no more, and that allowed to download the map of a whole country for offline use, but Google Maps also allow you to download map areas for offline use for a short period (like 30 days or so)

Plus, if you are willing to spend some money before the travel, and you currently own an iPhone (which seems to be the case according to some previous cartoons), you may consider to invest in a not so expensive, but with a decent camera, Android phone. You are gonna take photos, and iPhones have limited memory with no expansion options. Many Androids, probably most of them, have the option to expand memory via sd cards. If your memory is full (because of photos and videos), instead of deleting your current photos to take another (or hopping to be able to upload some of those photos, assuming you have enough data available), you may just swap the sd card. Or just get a relatively cheap digital camera that uses sd cards
