You have been misinformed. Detroit’s bankruptcy was brought on by decades of suburban flight, outsourcing and the subsequent collapse of the auto industry due to the 2008 global Lesser Depression. This is an exert from an article written by Tom Krisher and Dee-Ann Durbin of The Associated Press, posted in Global News, regarding the importance of the auto industry’s collapse in the eventual bankruptcy of the city:
“DID THE AUTO INDUSTRY’S FALL DRAG DOWN DETROIT?
It’s a big factor. The city is littered with abandoned factories built in the postwar boom years, most of which have multiple stories. As the Japanese auto invasion began cutting into Detroit’s sales, General Motors, Chrysler, Ford and hundreds of auto parts companies looked outside the city to build one-story plants that could handle modern assembly lines. With every downturn, more companies abandoned the city, leaving the hulking buildings to squatters. Detroit’s tax base continued to erode. By the time the auto industry melted down in 2009, only a few factories from GM and Chrysler were left. GM is the only one with headquarters in Detroit, though it has huge research and testing centres with thousands of jobs outside the city"
If you remember correctly, you will recall that it was Mitt Romney that declared that the auto industry should just go bankrupt. True, Detroit’s many problems were exacerbated by Democratic mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, who was a venal, corrupt politician and was eventually sent to prison, however, he was mayor for only three years, from 2005 until 2008. Also, it would be good to note that the Democrats are surely not the only ones who engage in corruption. Governor Bob McDonnell springs immediately to mind.
So, if you connect the dots, Detroit’s economic collapse was due, in most part, to the Republican policies that give tax incentives to corporations who outsource American jobs. The Obama administration saved the auto industry and thousands of jobs. Mitt Romney said it should go bankrupt. I hope this clears things up for you.
Anyone interested in reality and truth knows that corruption and mismanagement of the city of Detroit by it’s government is what destroyed it. The Democrats have ruled Detroit for about half a century and are without question the cause of its downfall. Those people who think that corrupt socialist government was not the cause are self-delusional at best.
It’s true that Bush enacted the first bail-out, which inordinately favored the banksters. Obama enacted the Cash for Clunkers program, that did indeed save the auto industry and thousands of downstream jobs as well. And yes, you are correct that the right-wing has been busily re-writing history, yet again, to convince their base that Obama instigated all of the bailout. Reading these comments, it appears that a nerve has been struck.

While the comic is about Ollie North, this is the way democrats look at Scott Walker, too.

You know, it’s a lot easier to keep a tax-paying population base if there are JOBS.
The real tax and government spending problem in the US has been spending $500 billion a year too much for the military.
