Oooh, this is kind of odd. This strip was first published on August 4, 1983. Frank Reynolds died on July 20, or 15 days earlier.

    From Wikipedia:

Reynolds was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in early 1983 and had been absent from his anchor position since April of that year. He died three months later, on July 20, at the age of 59; his death was attributed to acute viral hepatitis. (1)

Since strips are submitted several weeks before publication, BB must have drawn this strip after he learned about Reynolds’ illness but at least a week (probably three) before Reynolds’ death.

Maybe Opus got it wrong and the rumor was that he became a Pastafarian.

ABC news anchor Frank Reynolds was on leave from April, 1983 due to being diagnosed with multiple myeloma and died on July 20, 1983. It appears this strip was originally posted on August 4, 1983, but given the circumstances I would have thought the person Opus was conferring with would have been changed before it was published. I’m probably missing something.
