This strip must have come out in 1985 when Coca Cola marketed New Coke. I recall that they used Bill Cosby as a spokesman back then. It lasted for awhile but it received numerous complaints and Coca Cola rebounded with the return of Coca Cola Classic as well as the new Cherry Coke. One of the bigger marketing blunders of all time, Crosby even quit as spokesman saying the product damaged his image and credibility. Hmm, I think something else would do far more damage to your reputation than that in the coming future Bill……

Coke’s motto was, “Drink Coke Cola, it gives you a smile”. I’m old enough to remember when Coke really did give you a smile. They changed it and it never was the same thing again.

One thing that wasn’t highly advertised at the time was the soda industry’s switch from sugar to high fructose corn syrup in 1984. That’s why many would argue that today’s Coke still doesn’t taste like the Coke of our youth, and why Mexican Coke (Coca Cola, that is, not the other kind) is so popular in the US.

Might as well be “Yech-o, this Coke tastes the same.”

The more things change, the more they stay the same. So, sure, Young Binkley. When you’re Middle-Aged Binkley, e.g. in 2021, you’ll be the same naive young irritant you are now.

And though the size and shape of Opus’s honker may vary, he’ll still be the innocent star of this show, whatever “this show” is called at any given time….
