I’m reminded of a joke Johnny Carson did sometime in the mid ‘80s. In a spoof of new products, he held up a Coca Cola bottle with Lee Iacocca’s picture on it, labeled ‘Iacocca Cola’.
Prior to 1965, the Ford Motor Company mainly produced large family cars. As vice-president and general manager of the company, Lee Iacocca envisioned a sports car for the average person and produced one in the form of the Mustang. It was revolutionary in every sense of the word. They made driving fun again, and Ford could barely manufacture them fast enough to keep up with the demand. GM realized they were being left in the dust and developed the Camaro to capture their share of that booming market.
While the Camaro was out of production for several years because of lagging sales, the Mustang has continued its success story for over a half century.
Iacocca’s success at Ford led to him being hired as CEO at Chrysler which was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time, and he is credited with saving that company, mainly by convincing the U.S. congress to bail out the company in the public interest. Its recovery was aided by the introduction of the mini-van… ironically the polar opposite of the Mustang.
