The first thing to do, when the child is about 14, because it’s too big a blow before that, is to sit the kid down and explain that you are an ordinary mortal who is trying, often unsuccessfully to deal with a big scary world. Teenagers become angry with their parents when they realize that they can’t control the world and make it a warm fuzzy place for them eternally, and it scares them half to death.
