Grandad: Boy, you didn't know I was retired? You thought I was just unemployed all this time?! Riley: I knew you were retired. I just didn't know what the word meant. Grandad: Well, what did you think it meant?! Riley: I dunno...I always figured it was old people slang for "lazy."
An old Dennis the Menace strip made the same joke. Mrs. Wilson says to Dennis, “Mr. Wilson doesn’t go to work because he’s retired. Do you know what that means?” Dennis guesses, “Lazy?” as Mr. Wilson looks up, scowling.
