The natural method of breeding has mostly been overtaken by artificial means. There is an amusing chapter in one of the “All Creatures Great and Small” books about when the vets first started to take samples in tubes. Lesson: Do not get the temperature of the tube too hot!
I read a biography of James Herriot (real name: James Alfred Wight) written by his son, and according to his son, James and Siegfried and Tristan were all more or less the way they were in the books. In fact, according to Herriot’s son, Siegfried (whose real name was Donald Sinclair) was even more eccentric in real life than he was in the books!
I’ve read the main four books several times, seen the main series programs many times. I’m not sure about the serious literary value of the books, but I wish I could tell stories in such a natural way.
