In the old Boston Garden, before TD Place, the two team’s benches were on opposite sides of the ice but the penalty boxes were both on the Bruins side. A penalized Bruin could take one step to the ice and then a second step to the bench. An opposing player would have to skate across the rink. TD Place has also brought the Bruins ice surface up to date with the rest of the NHL insofar as size of the ice sheet. It was notoriously shorter in the center zone from the rest of the league. Nobody seemed to mind for decades.
