When my parents were children (in the 1950’s), they had iceboxes instead of electric refrigerators. Ice was collected in the winter and stored in buildings, then delivered door to door like that for people to use in the iceboxes. (My grandfather kept his old icebox in his basement, maybe he thought he would need it again!)
