I’d heard it was some entrepeneurs want to start prospecting and mining asteroids, for both the metals and volatiles (shades of Charles Sheffield’s stories, not to mention C.J. Cherryh et al and Gerard O’Neill’s serious L4, L5 colonies.)

The hardest part is likely permission to launch anything that could even achieve LEO; if you can put anything in LEO, they can call it a weapon, even a crowbar!

From another perspective, “It followed me home! Can I keep it? We won’t need more methane and nitrogen for centuries!”

The truth is, we need those big ol’ planets to catch as many rocks as they can…Did you ever notice the other side of the moon is riddled with the craters where big ole rocks hit..How many of those would have hit us if they didn’t hit the moon? To hit the other side of the moon, something has to be coming right at us…The big planets are like vacuum cleaners…We owe our lives to them….

I got a kick out of the asteroid that hit Jupiter, but broke into a lot of pieces and scattered itself around the globe…At the time, there was a debate going on about whether or not we should worry about big rocks from space killing us…Sounded kinda stupid, I have to admit…But when that thing crashed into Jupiter in a dozen huge parts…It seemed like Mother Nature saying, “What part of this don’t you understand?”
