When I was in school, the teachers could not apply corporal punishment, but there was still the threat of “the strip” administered by the principal.
We did, however, have one teacher who would pace about the class while teaching, and once in a while, bring his wooden yard stick with a huge smack onto the desk of a daydreaming student. I suppose that would be frowned upon now, but the rest of the students thought it was pretty funny.
