Our favorite sub to hate was Mrs Gaub. Mean witch of a woman. WE went to the local store and purchased several packs of “Gob Stoppers” and put them on the desk at lunch time.WE were allowed to listen to radios while we worked by our regular teacher. NOT her. There was just a folding door between two classes. I sat in the back of the room next to that door. It was winter so I had a big parka that I wore. I put the radio in the sleeve and turned it on. She demanded we turn the radio off several times. Third time I just told her it was from the class in back of us. “Oh OK” We continued on as normal listening to the radio as we worked.
That doesn’t always work, Nerwin. I was a sub once. I did 6 years of subbing and in one middle school class, an English class, I believe, I taught them their lessons. But, usually, what you says is true. Most subs just hold the class together. It provides time for a study hall or nap time.
When I was teaching and I knew ahead of time that I’d have a sub, I would read my students the riot act. I told them that if they gave the sub any problems, he/she was to take their names, and their parents would be called. My students knew that I didn’t make empty threats, so they usually behaved pretty well.
