Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for December 21, 1987
Transcript:
Calvin: This whole Santa Claus thing jsut doesn't make sense. Why all the secrect? Why all the mystert? If the guy exists, why doesn't he ever show himself and prove it? And if he doesn't exist, what's the meaning of all this? Hobbes: I dunno... Isn't this a religious holiday? Calvin: Yeah, but actually, I've got the same questions about God.
Krendall, I totally agree! If God were to prove to everyone that he exists, then we would all know without a doubt. This would defeat part of the main purpose for our existence here: learning to follow God, even through doubt, for which he can bless us far more than if we follow him because of perfect knowledge.
As for Santa, since the person he was based off of died several centuries ago, if he lived at all, it would be fairly difficult for him to reveal himself and prove his Jolly Saint Nicholas-ness.
