Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for October 27, 1988
Transcript:
Calvin: Just think, earth was a cloud of dust 4.5 billion years ago... 3 billion years ago, the first bacteria appeared, then came sea life, dinosaurs, birds, mammals, and finally, a million years ago, man. Now in 1988 there's me. ...The acme of evolution. Hobbes: Oh, please.
Many have made that assumption: that we are the acme of evolution, when we are just one branch of a huge tree of life. But how to avoid such egocentrism? One book I read did it by going backwards: starting with homo sapiens they worked back through time, noting when our branch joined to other branches of life.
