Hm, maybe letting this immature little ENFP become a mat on the tarmac isn’t such a bad idea after all.

I used to have a reoccuring dream where I was taking a walk and came upon a tall stone wall on a high cliff. Without hesitation I’d step up on the wall to look over it but I’d lose my balance and fall for a long time. I’d wake crying and sweating and I guess yelling sometimes because my Mom would rush in to see if I was alright. I had this dream for many years and became scared of heights because of it. When I went to college it was like deja vu. They had a huge stone wall exactly the same as in my dream. It went around the school with a stone walkway on a huge hill or small mountain overlooking the town. One day I got up the nerve to climb up on the top of the wall to look down. The view was gorgeous and I overcame my fear of heights that day and never had the dream again!

Icarus flew too high in the sky. Ultimately, in the rarified air, he was rendered unconscious, plunged to the earth and died. Calvin passed out in Sunday’s strip but that’s another story. In this sequence, Calvin remains conscious, although not always aware (such as yesterday when his somersault distracted him). Calvin will survive unless the writer retired before Calvin reached the ground. In that case, we’d be left hanging in midair with Calvin.

To wicky: Calvin is only six years old. Although he is precocious in some ways, Calvin doesn’t yet realize that smacking a female on the lips is a much greater pleasure. If you ‘(up)side’ with Calvin on this one, I’ll be inclined to call you wacky wicky.

By the way, yesterday Calvin said ” When you fall from two miles up in the sky, you look down, GASP, and suddenly wake up.” Well, Calvin looked down, GASPED, and then GASPED five more times (instead of waking up) as he fell out of sight in the final panel. Did he GASP five more times because his theory proved to be false? At least Calvin didn’t speak in the name of the Lord.

“When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it presumptuously: you shall not be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 18:22

Calvin will soon be meeting with St Peter, so, instead of thinking of all the bad things he’s done, he should be prepping his meeting with recounting all the good (any good?) things that he’s done. I guess that won’t take long.

Deuteronomy on what to do with a “stubborn and rebellious son”:

“all the men of his town are to stone him to death”.

    Deuteronomy 21:21

Perhaps not the best idea to apply Biblical verses to Calvin & Hobbes (or vice versa)?

When I was about 5, I had a recurring dream about falling.

Rather like Calvin, I would fall seemingly forever. Then, instead of the expected Wiley Coyote WHAM! into a canyon bottom, I would wake up on the floor beside my bed.

The fall was real but was no more than a foot and a half (45 cm for our metric friends). My dream had expanded that short drop into miles.

whatcha– think you will agree , any airplane crash a pilot walks away from is a great landing . Likewise any landing from a height that you live through is great , you may not get all your points but some are due .

Puddleglum2 –Saucy1121–is right , and not the earth but in an expanse of water. Drowning in that expanse , his hart broken Poppa Daedalus named the water what it is called by today the Icarian Sea . A classic Son not heading sound Fatherly advice story .

Owlsly Whistlepig–Some how Hobbes is at fault here.

@Ronshua, I’ve been corrected on that definition of landings.

A good landing is one the pilot walks away from.

A great landing is one where the plane can still be used again.

To Saucy1121 and Ronshua, and anyone else who cares: Perhaps there are various versions which differ in some respects. Mine is called “ICARUS, The Fable Unlocked. I quote the two paragraphs that are pertinent to the issue.

“Icarus was so far up into the sky that he reached that realm where there isn’t enough oxygen to support life. Icarus passed out. He plunged to the earth and died. Afterwards, seeing something fall out of the sky, people gathered around and observed his dead body. One person observed, “He must have flown too close to the sun; see, his wings are melted.” What happened? Icarus passed out and upon re-entry too much heat buildup caused his wings to “melt”. So everyone thought he got too close to the sun. But, it was too cold at that altitude for that to happen; his wax wings melted because of re-entry.”

If the KJV of the Bible was good enough for NoMoreSaulOnlyPaul, it’s good enough for me. Besides, I think the Majority Text manuscripts from which the KJV ultimately came, are better than the Sinaiticus and Vaticanus manuscripts from which most of the modern translations have come.

bananasinpajamas, from Wikipedia: Puddleglum is a fictional character in the children’s fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, Puddleglum appears in the Silver Chair, in which he is a principal character. He also appears briefly at the end of The Last Battle. Puddleglum is an uncommonly cheerful Marsh-wiggle; however, as Marsh-wiggles are best known for their pessimism, he is still a rather gloomy fellow, described by other characters as a “wet blanket”. Name The name Puddleglum may be a typical Marsh-wiggle name, but it can also be viewed as a concatenation of “Puddle” for the wetland area where Marsh-wiggles live, and “glum” which describes their outlook on life.

I consider myself to be a realist and ultimately an optimist (“Our God Reigns”), but I like Puddleglum’s character for various reasons. Read the book yourself and you might realize why I like him. Since Puddleglum is Puddleglum1 with 1 understood, I decided to use Puddleglum2 as my Calvin and Hobbes comments name. :o)

kab2rb, I consider myself to be a Conservative-Evangelical-Fundamentalist Baptist, but Baptists run the gamut from extreme Fundamentalist to liberal. I’m on the right, but not the far right. Your sister’s church sounds like one of the Extreme Fundamentalist variety, although I do think it is unfortunate that too much of present-day secular society mores and lifestyles have infiltrated into the church. Calvin is a fun kid in the comic strip, but I wouldn’t want a son of mine to have some of his thoughts, ways and mannerisms, philosophies and outlook on life.

Since I explained “Puddleglum”, now people know why Superfrog said “we puddledwellers must stick together.” Puddleglum is a Marsh-wiggle, not a frog, but the Porter at The House of Harfang did call him Froggy.

bananasinpajamas, if you watch that show, you must be younger than I am. Do you watch Barney too (not Barney2)? “I love you, you love me; We’re a happy family.”
