Tuna is better for you, Hobbes!
But ask Mom for the hotdog; then it won’t be wasted, although Calvin’s humor was wasted on Mom. We can appreciate it, though.
I bet that if the dynamite were real that Mom still wouldn’t have given him a cookie. There’s a reason why Calvin is the way he is. Start with the parents first …..
Better rechannel that imagination into another direction Calvin before you blow up the house. You’ve had enough accidents lately and speaking of which, what happened after he hit the baseball with the golf club?
“Quotation marks used around words to give special effect or to indicate irony are usually unnecessary. When irony or special effect is intended, skillful preparation can take the place of using these quotes. Resort to apologetic quotation marks or quotation marks used to express irony only after such attempts have failed, keeping in mind that the best writing does not rely on apologetic quotation marks.”
– The AMA Manual of Style (9th ed, 1998), p. 220
Puddleglum: Let me get this straight. You think Calvin should be rewarded for threatening a terrorist act? It doesn’t matter that the dynamite wasn’t real, he was serious about using threats to get a cookie. Mom shouldn’t have scolded him for wasting food, she should have punished him and redirected his attitude.
calvin reminds me more and more of me when i was a young’un, but i never did anything with explosives ..
well except for that time with those firecrackers and the pile of gravel in the back yard
Just reminds me of the first time I used a microwave and tried to cook hot dogs. My son was little then and he wanted me to do it again. I never blew any up again but curled a couple in half. I was telling my girlfriend and she almost wet herself laughing and then told me you were supposed to poke them first. My son was disappointed and caught him blowing a few up when I was in another room!

If he had drawn this post 9/11 Watterson would possibly have ended up in jail.
Calvin certainly would have.

It’s good not to waste food, but ‘lighten up’, Mom! Calvin’s sense of humor here is worth at least one cookie.
sjoujke about 15 years ago
I agree…his ingenuity is worth maybe even two cookies.
Leonardeuler about 15 years ago
In jail, Yukoner ? Then he could keep Spook company.

I wonder why Calvin wishes to get his hand on some real dynamite ? He can wish directly to get his hand on cookies instead - no ?
ajohni3 about 15 years ago
I would have loved for my step kids to have imaginations like this instead of give me, video games, girls or why or how…

josh_bisbee about 15 years ago
Kids today don’t really have an imagination like that. TV, video games, and the public school system sucked it all out of them
