This will be my last post for the next five weeks. My wife and I are heading to Germany and the Netherlands on holiday. We start with the passion play in Oberammergau and end on a house boat in Amsterdam.
It is amazing that Dad knows about the phases (I wouldn’t have been surprised had Dad referred to faces - remember, no qualifying exams to be a dad http://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1987/07/21).
have a great trip Yukoner
i remember hearing about Oberammergau when i was studying German beer in High School. it should be spectacular.
my family originated in Holland. though i’ve only been there once, i know from personal experience that they really like Canadians there.
I was just wondering.. when you say it loud ‘faces’ and ‘phases’ sound the same.. so how did dad know that Calvin actually meant ‘faces’ and not ‘phases’ ??
Some jokes are very good when you read them..but should be avoided being told out loud. I made the mistake of telling my friends this joke:
Q:Why did the bald man have rabbits tattooed on his head?
A:From a distance, they would look like ‘hares’
All I got was blank stares :(
Yukoner,
With that pun, you should go on V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N (song by Connie Francis)! Actually, it didn’t faze me either.
Enjoy your holiday every day for five weeks. It’s another phase of your life.
Sprechen sie Deutsch? If not, you need to know one thing: Wo ist die toilette?

They don’t sound the same when I say them. The middle sibilant is voiced in ‘phases’ and unvoiced in ‘faces’. The difference between ‘s’ and ‘z’.

From a distance, it looks as if your friends have blank brains, and/or they are bald-brained. :o) Maybe they don’t know what hares are! That must have been a hairy experience for you. Believe it or not, I’ve encountered the same thing from time to time. It’s a bit awkward!
“Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls Would scarcely get your feet wet.” -from Deteriorata
I don’t think written or spoken makes any difference to some people who are just not pun-‘oriented’ (no reference to China or Korea).
Just remember that “the hairs (or hares) on your head are all numbered” by a ‘hairy thunderer’ also from Deteriorata!
Johanan Rakkav: Thanks for the Desiderata/Deteriorata link.
I had forgotten about that.
GreenJade: Puddleglum2 is right. Puns should not be limited to print. They are still funny when spoken as long as the listener is paying attention. (I would have laughed at “Hares)
The two words sound enough alike for a child to hear it one way and think “face” while the adult knows more about the moon’s “phases” and corrects the child. Imagination vs. down-to-earth.
Those Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs will make you see stuff, no question. Yukoner - go visit the Mercedes factory in Stuttgart for me and tell us what it was like. I’ve always wanted to go and then buy one. Likelihood of that about the same as Calvin doing it…bleah..ptooey….
Looking at a quarter moon, my granddaughter said , ” If you look at it long enough you can see the whole thing”. I said ” yeah if you give it a month.’

@kea: You might as well give up now, that’s only going to happen once in a blue moon.

If Dad were to go look, the ‘Man in the Moon’ would not make faces. What an impression Calvin makes… even on the moon. ;)

If you keep making phases, your moon is going to stay that way.

Face it, Calvin is experiencing lunacy, hence the faces and not phases. Good thing they weren’t phazers, tasers or lasers.

Mrs. Yukoner++Keep your eye on hubby in Amsterdam. House boat does sound safer than just sight seeing there.
