Calvin is trying to have some quality time with his
father. His father should had put down his book and
showed him a trick that’s been carried down over
the years.
I could never decide if Calvin’s dad was detached, or if that was just his own special form of humor, devised to communicate with Calvin on their own private wavelength. I also wonder if Calvin made his dad what his dad is, or the other way around.
While it’s important for children not be spoiled to the point where they believe they’re the center of the universe, it’s even more important for them not to be ignored by their parents simply because they don’t want to be “bothered” by their kids. No one put a gun to his parents’ heads and forced them to procreate; therefore, they owe their child the time and attention it takes to raise him properly. Maybe if they did, he wouldn’t be the way he is. The book could have waited while dad spared his son 5 minutes of his undivided attention – even if it was to play a silly number-guessing game.
Btw: “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley!”
RIP, Leslie Nielsen. I loved you in “Tammy And The Bachelor”, “Airplane!” and especially “The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad!” movies (plus television appearances on some of my favorite shows). You were the best and life’s not going to seem nearly as bright and funny without you!
Remember Leslie Nielsen’s cameo in the original Posidon Adventure? I loved Forbidden Planet. Anyway, How does Dad find the time to read with a kid like Calvin?

His Dad was constantly jerking his chain. It is one of the funnier parts of the strip.

The reaction in panel three is generally worth the effort – both the father and Hobbes appear to agree on this point.

I was thinking his jeans were hanging in the closet. But knowing Calvin, they were probably on his bedroom floor.
