In the first panel, Calvin has removed his thinking cap and his thoughts have escaped him.
Mom’s sarcasm today may elicit additional discussion of her parental competence (or lack thereof). I like to picture her putting down her book and giving Calvin some affectionate, undivided attention in panel five – like the time when she was chasing him around the house and tickling him before bed. Thanks to many of you for your thoughtful comments yesterday on parenting. (Note: There were additional comments late in the day – in case you missed them.)I think there will always be a gap between those who had really good parents and those who had the opposite. Those who live on one side of the gap can never fully understand what it is like for those on the other side.Reading comments from both sides can’t eliminate the gap, but it can help us to reduce it. Perhaps those who had one parent of each type are best able to relate to both sides.Regardless whether we consider our parents to have been good, bad, or somewhere in-between, Calvin and Hobbes is a reminder that all parenting is very challenging, and all parents are human.Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (February 22, 1987)
