Well that was a kick up the butt if ever I saw one. Bit harsh dad and probably you’ve broken poor little Calvin’s spine. May have to call childline on you unless Calvin has already reported you for child cruelty.
It seems Dad was not around the last time Calvin made snow goons, or dug a roundabout way to the car through the snow, or the so-called Noodle Incident. He doesn’t really want to see Calvin’s creative side!
“So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event:
Save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts.
Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten – straight up, no styling.
Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don’t make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification.
Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love – not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician.
They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage.
Sing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America , not you .
And please remember, not everything has to be sung as a Negro spiritual. We’re getting a little weary of that.
It only creates more leisure for those at the top. For the working classes, it creates more unemployment as the jobs they did are done by machines. The few employed are expected to do the work of 3-4 people for the salary of one.
Was Watterson still buying into that promise? What all our technology has done is raise expectations about how much we can accomplish all at one time, and made us busier and more frantic than ever before, And it’s made the world more expensive. How do all those developers get so rich? Everything about owning and using modern technology costs money.
@bluramRight On from a school band director who is now afraid to listen to the National Anthem from any person or group except one of our military bands, Jimi Hendrix and Whitney Houston notwithstanding. My high school band director was retired Navy and a WW2 vet, and he would lecture us that congress had even set the tempo for the Anthem and not to mess with it EVER!
@bluram. I agree completely. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I am not in the military but when I was young we were taught great respect for our flag, national anthem and country. I am 75 and things are so different now.

There are a lot of kids that need their butts kicked outside; without their internet devices. For all you whiny butts that are complaining against “dad”; you pobably needed to have your butts kicked when you were younger.
I love the The Star-Spangled Banner as much as the next guy (that is where the ‘patriot’ in ‘leftwingpatriot’ comes in) but what does that have to do with Calvin getting his butt kicked outside?Having said that, here goes:-http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=edeZqCchIYg
Leisure in this economy. My machine the computer helps me with my work. However since I get things done I am giving more work. That is ok because many people are out of work. When you are out of work leisure stinks.
OK, this comment I am submitting here is to address a most griverse embarrassing error in one of my earlier reply/post to @bluram. Due to my clumsy fingers not being able to keep up with my brain or vice-versa. The correct reply/comment should have reflected…
“I am not American, but will this work…?”
I would like to take this time now to issue an apology for which I may have unwittingly/unintentionally offended any ACTUAL Americans, veterans or citizens. It was not, I say again… NOT my intention to mislead/misinformed/misrepresent myself before all here.
Again, I am truly, totally Over-the-Top Really-REALLY Sorry and profusely Apologies for my Stupidity/Error, and I’ll be strapping myself to a chair with a machine repeatedly slapping me left and right in the face while yelling at myself to Always-ALWAYS Double and Triple Check before submitting my replies/comments.

Gotta side with Calvin on this one. Leisure is meant to be spent any way one wants. So what if free time isn’t being used productively?
