A couple of strips from the first year of Calvin and Hobbes:Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (March 28, 1986)Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (September 20, 1986)The word “cool” was still in use 26 years later (and counting):Click here: Zits (April 9, 2012)
@moronbis and @leftwingpatriot: Thanks for your thanks. Glad you enjoy the strips. I enjoy sharing some of my favorites with others, and I think good comic strips are, well……. cool………
Since I was a kid in the 50s, “cool” has meant pretty much the same thing. Probably predated me by a couple of generations, and I suspect has its roots in Jazz. The Beat Generation certainly picked it up as their own. My problem now is figuring out what “kewl” means…
Don’t knock typewriters. Russian hackers can’t steal your identity from them. I wouldn’t be surprised if they came back into style. (Royal still makes a few models -you can buy them on Amazon.)
Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes are asking Calvin’s mother for contact lenses. He wants to change the color of his eyes. Of course, Calvin’s mother thinks this is a poor idea, but instead of Calvin being thankful that his mother is looking out for him, he thinks she doesn’t understand what cool is. Hobbes then ate a tuna-fish sandwich.
Thanks, @Ginger V, @Gweedo, and @rgcviper. By the way, I check back with the previous day’s comments on the next day or two, so I always see the late comments that people post.

Cool: *Slang use for “fashionable” is 1933, originally Black English, said to have been popularized in jazz circles by tenor saxophonist Lester Young. *Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2010 Douglas Harper

It’s like I tell my four sons: “Your mom and I used to be a lot of fun. Then we had kids.”

But Calvin’s eyes don’t have any color. Even in the colored Sunday strips they’re just black and white.
