Panels 1 and 2 are the “throwaway” Sunday panels that were not printed by many newspapers. Sadly, this means that readers missed seeing much of Bill Watterson’s genius, since they never saw the first row of panels in any of the Sunday strips.Today’s strip is from 1990, and all of the Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strips from 1985 to 1991 had throwaway panels in the first row. Fortunately, beginning in 1992, Bill Watterson was able to force the Syndicate to force the newspapers to print the entire Sunday strip, giving Bill a lot more artistic freedom to work with. Here is the first Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strip without throwaway panels, from February, 1992. It was the first strip that Bill Watterson published following his first 9-month sabbatical. Notice how he has sized the panels differently, in order to make it impossible for the newspapers to cut off the top row. He also put numbers in the corners of the panels, to help the reader understand their order.Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (February 2, 1992)Here is another example of how eliminating the throwaway panels gave Bill Watterson much more freedom to display his amazing artwork:Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (May 10, 1992)

@M2MM: There is speculation on the Internet that Hobbes originally belonged to Calvin’s mom, but this is not stated in the comic strips.

IT just hit me. Hobbes attacks on Calvin when the latter gets home are just Hobbes’ variation on Dino welcoming Fred Flintstone home.

It’s not paranoia if they’re really out to get you.
