I wasn’t good at school but I enjoyed going because it was something to do. Of course this was in the dark ages, 60’s-70’s, when there was only 4 or 5 TV channels and no video games. :-)
In my opinion, the key to any punishment is that it be consistent, predictable and objectively fair. My father also using spanking, but less than five times, I would say. It was very clear when I crossed the line and earned a spanking, so it there was no anger involved, and no resentment. Needless to say it was a line I learned, and learned not to cross.
About the whole spanking thing: I remember a “Mad” parody of comic strips that had Dennis The Menace’s father FINALLY losing patience with him and proceeding to give him a right good whuppin’. Otherwise it was always just the time-out in the corner thing.
My son is a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes and is homeschooled. One day when my wife stepped out of the room she came back to find his stuffed bear Sam sitting at the table in front of his homework. My son had gone into his room to play and explained that Sam, his bear, was doing the work for him.
I loved to learn, but hated the “structure” of Catholic school. I went to school in a poorer area, they taught us to kneel, pray, and accept our place. That did not go for me. I was top of my class, when I finally stopped going and got put in public School, I was about a year behind.Maybe Catholic schools in better areas teach better, but my experiance was not like that.
Many countries in Europe has outlawed spanking. Including mine. It was illegal when I was born so I never was spanked. And just a thought: why should it be ok to spank a child when it is illegal to do to a grown up?Also, most kids are well behaved anyway. I dont see spanking would do anyone a better person.

School should be a good (but not impossible) challenge. Then you can carry the same attitude over to work and other activities.

If Donald Duck and Porky Pig can be accepted sans trousers, why not Hobbes?

Calvin works so hard at not working that he is working hard.

anything can be abused. mental abuse can be far more destructive than physical abuse.

It looks like this may be the first time Hobbes was shown with someone else besides Calvin present, where he reverts to a stuffed toy.

It’s just as well, Calvin, Hobbes might’ve done TOO good a job and gotten better grades.

If they’d pulled it off, Hobbes would’ve raised Calvin’s GPA high enough to make the Dean’s List. Then the diabolical plan would have fallen apart!

Considering the times Calvin has left the house au naturel, I’m not so sure the lack of pants would have been the giveaway.
