Mom: I loved seeing Cathy yesterday, but I went to bed with a whole new list of worries... Is she happy or just pretending to be happy? Didn't her eyes look a little tired? DId she seem anxious? Sad? Frusterated?? Should I have said something? Could I have fixed it? I couldn't sleep a wink!! Mother's Day was beautiful...but when we really need the loved ones gathered around is on Mother's night.
In the darkness of my statement on the ship, I used to listen to “Never Meant to Hurt You” by Laura Nyro, First Songs. The days seemed endless at sea. I stood on my feet for 4 hours on the bridge as jets roared off the deck. Then roll into some problems that seem to pile on top of themselves. You come into port with a pile of money and there were always pretty women who wanted to help spend it with you.I had that school picture of you. It seems like the only sane object at that time. But I knew you were with some good looking guy back home. I just angrily threw it out into the sea and forgot you for 40 years.Recently, I saw you on some video and you were talking about your mom. I still remember that worry look she had when I took you out that one and only time. All the stuff came up and I went a little crazy. That damn 18 year old kid came back.I have a wonderful wife of 40 years. I have always been amazed how such a beautiful woman could be in love with me. She is the rock that my life stands on. She gave me two great kids. Both my children are creative and loving human beings, mostly due to their mother.I hope I didn’t upset your fans. Finally, when I came back from Northern Michigan and you were so unhappy about gaining that damn weight, I touched your face, trying to tell you that you are beautiful. Real men look to the heart. The dumb guys who are looking for the pretty faces and hot bodies I have known are real losers. I hope you find that guy who sees how beautiful you are – in the heart.Goodbye, Cathy.
