I tried for years to get people to stop sending me gifts. Every year, I told people that I didn’t want to celebrate Christmas, and that I neither wanted to receive nor give gifts, but everybody sent me gifts anyway, so I felt obligated to send something in return. Then one year I told everybody that if they sent me something, they wouldn’t receive anything in return. I haven’t gotten a Christmas present since, which shows that, no matter what people say, Christmas isn’t about giving, it’s about getting.
