It is NOT obvious. Some cats just want the door left open, so that they can look out and, maybe in five minutes, decide to carefully go out. Any cat with sense will want to check out a new scene before entering into it. It’s dogs that just blunder out.
I’m not saying you are obligated to wait with an open door for your cat to make up its mind, but that is what the cat would rather do. :)

Just like Rum Tum Tugger, he’s always on the wrong side of the door. But at least he’s dressed appropriately for harsh weather!
