Swearing on your uncle’s grave simply does not carry the weight of swearing on your mother’s. Maybe Mona’s parents are still alive and this is the best she can do, but if I were Smoky I’d plan to sleep on the couch in any case.
For Mona’s sake, I hope her promise is simply that anything “inapproprate or gross” will be kept out of Smokey’s line of sight. “Inappropriate” and “gross” are both subjective qualities, and under the proper circumstances Mona might find the same view both highly appropriate and a thing of beauty (which is a joy forever).
