For those who think “government should be run more like a business,” just remember that in the United States government, there is only one profit center: the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). That is the agency tasked with collecting the revenues that fund our government and try to rein in the enormous nation debt accrued from decades of unfunded spending and deficit liabilities by Republicans.
When Joe Biden and a (barely) Democratic congress squeaked through increased funding for IRS collections — with the restriction that increased enforcement activity would only be targeted at incomes over $400,000 ($800,000 joint filings) — the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the $14 billion investment in increased targeted enforcement would net increased revenues of more than $90 billion in taxes owed by not collected.
None of the increased collection activity would result in more audits for anyone making less than $400,000 in net income ($800,000 joint filers), and would primarily target only very wealthy incomes.
By trying to revoke this investment, MAGA Mike Johnson (the Republicans’ description) has announced loud and clear that…
• Republicans do not care about law and order
• Republicans do not care about annual budget deficits or the national debt
• Republicans do not care about middle class working people who have to make up the difference when high-income millionaires and billionaires don’t pay the taxes they owe
• Republicans only want to protect their rich mega-donors and protect the high-income tax cheats
