Cartoon physics. The missile would slide off the snow shovel going up (centrifugal force) and land on them. If there were a basket to contain the snowball and a stop near the end of the assent to stop the arm, it would work, but be an onagar rather than a trebuchet. The trebuchet is basically a giant sling, powered by a weighted arm.
