We used to tie roller skates to old couch cushions. That way, when you fell, you had something soft to land on.

I’ve got to be considerably older than this dad, and even when I was a kid, we used store-bought skateboards (though I was more into pogo sticks)

I think it’s because they never know when they might record the next viral video.
