Deanna: Game! Kids: Yeeeaaa!! Katie: What was the score? Kid: Did we win? Deanna: We don't keep score, sweetie. At your age, we want you to just have fun while you're learning the game. That way, we're all winners. Man: 7 to 3. Gary: Yeah, we creamed 'em.

Deena is such a great coach. Always encouraging the kids to have fun and play the game.

Some kids are born that way just like parents. My oldest who played soccer through college made everything into a competition from the time she could walk and talk. “I’ll beat you to the refrigerator, I’ll beat you drinking my juice”.

To many parents, the point of their child’s sports team is, in the words of Conan, “To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.”

I was a coach of an Academic Bowl team. When asked why they should participate, my reply was 1) a pizza party after every meeting. 2) make lots of new friends. 3) Memories to talk about at reunions. 4) a pile of free books. 5) A day off school. 6) resume building. My principal asked “Why didn’t you talk about the joy of winning?” Because it didn’t dawn on me. 1,2 and 4 would have been enough.
