We live in depressing, contentious times — “The world is too much with us.” Either our comic strips reflect what’s really on our minds, or they wallow in innocent frivolity…think “Family Circus” or “Blondie”. There’s nothing wrong with that; it’s like cotton candy for the brain. But not many strips can remain completely outside the real world and still be funny, or witty, or clever — some, but not many.
BC and Wizard of ID have always made reference to current events in the strip; I rather appreciated that today’s pokes fun at the political tension in the American body politic, without taking sides whatsoever.
I put up with my in-laws talking hate politics, not wishing to start a family squabble, until I couldn’t take it anymore. I laid into them, told what I thought, and they have never mention politics again. It was, I think, a job very well done.
