I have to admit that I favor the kids that I know, too.

A candy corn? Wow. Just. Way. Too. Generous. And then turn off the light at 5 pm. Is the sun even down by then? I donā€™t think so. The only way Iā€™d do that is if we had bite size Butterfingers or Baby Ruths. Then the light wouldnā€™t go on at all!Actually, where we live we donā€™t get the little trick or treaters and I miss that, although I donā€™t miss the later evening teens. Even so, a lot of kids around here go to church sponsored events that are safer, I guess.

    Boo! Hoo.

Ah yesā€¦. while even little kids watch in sheer amazementā€¦big-hearted Burl will drop a single candy corn into their bags.Which will eventually be thrown away anywayā€¦ (if they can find it in there) cos todayā€™s moms donā€™t let their kids eat unwrapped treats.

But in any case, theyā€™re NOT ā€œdividingā€ the candy.

Thereā€™s no such thing as a bag of candy containing only wrapped Hershey Kisses and unwrapped candy cornā€¦.they have a bag of each,,, already separate.Noā€¦ this is just an excuse to open both bagsā€¦saving the 10 seconds it would take them on Wednesday to pour them into separate bowlsā€¦and under the guise of ā€œpreparednessā€ ā€¦to start guzzling candy the day before Halloween.Iā€™m not sure those 2 little bags will last till THREE pm much less five.

Mikie, where I live the little kids go out way before sundown. The world isnā€™t as safe as it once wasā€¦. or as we blithely assumed it wasā€¦

My siblings and I, and the neighbor kids, all under ten years old, roamed in unsupervised small groups, knocking on strangerā€™s doors half a mile and more from homeā€¦. with never a thought of danger.

Now the parents go up to every door, and the kids are home in bed by the time I would have left the house at their ages.

This will be the first year in maybe 10 that Iā€™ll be home on Halloween night.

I bought some candy but this time when the little kids stop coming and the teenagers start arriving in packs driving their own cars itā€™ll be lights out for me, too.

the tweens that donā€™t put on a costume get a rock in their bag, and they have no idea where it came from when they find it.

according to norfolk law, if your teenager is out trick or treating (illegal for over-12 years old) you can pick him up at Juvenile the next morning. yup. all nite in lock up.we havenā€™t had trickortreaters come by our neighborhood for 7 years, now.

Back in the day, my grandmother would buy small paper bags and give out fresh popcorn. Made with lard, of course.

We usually get 300 to 400 kids. They come in buses from another part of town. I will give candy to kids and teens in costumes. But I draw the line at adults carrying infants!

As a tweenager in Riverside, IL we had an old maid neighbor who invited us in on Haloween for a half grapefruit with brown sugar on it. You sat at her kitchen table to finish it on the spotā€¦ She had 50 ish cats living in the house and it smelledā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ badā€¦. ! ! !

Next in the festivities is the ā€˜Separation of the Layersā€™ of the candy corn. This way they effectively have more candy to hand out and wonā€™t run the risk of disappointing any of Crustwoodā€™s junior citizens. (Plus Burl likes the orange part.)

@morgueritemMamaw would pop her corn in a dutch oven and put it in a large dish pan. I was in charge of baggging. I probably ate more than I bagged. My dentist has sent two kids to school at my expense.

I usually give candy bars ā€“ 3 to young kids who put any kind of effort into their costume, but just 1 to teenagers who come as ā€œfootball fansā€ ā€“ ie, no costume.

What a nice thing to do! Iā€™m sure she still enjoys the experience even without getting to eat a lot of candy.

Iā€™m making cupcakes for neighbor children who regularly visit me (especially when I sit out in front reading) and will ice them and deliver to their houses tomorrow morning (SO Parents will know that I made them- they often have taken my homemade stuff home) . I used to give out full size chocolate bars when Cuddles was still alive ā€“ with a different bunch of kids who are now gone (not for any reason but that she LOVED having all the folks come by). Now I mostly see carloads of strangers drive to one end of our street and they are all strangers, dark out and canā€™t see costumes (so few are homemade or creative); I will try to stay up till 8 and leave the light on until then, but I try to stay with circadian rhythms and shut off bedroom lights before 10 (after my mix of cartoon/sitcoms).

When I was a kid there were some nice older ladies who baked stuff but it got messed up in the bag, so I will deliver early to avoid that. By the time my kids were doing Halloween, there were the razors in apples stories etc ;-( but I made, or helped them make their own costumes; nothing off the rack! When they were little it was always a theme but older they did each thir own. I remember 2 very unusual later ones:Oldest boy dressed as a woman and I helped him with dress and makeup. He was upset because I did too good a job (drag queen?) and another time youngest son wanted to be werewolf so among the rest, I used spirit glue to attach hair clippings to his face (I used to cut all theirs and their fatherā€™s hair).

Many years ago, when my children where small, I too resented older trick or treaters. After I had lived in the town a few years though, I realized they were often from the poorest families. Feeling embarrassed to wear a costume because of their age, they still could not resist the treats they rarely gotā€¦ I donā€™t give out candy late either (canā€™t sit up long), but give freely to all who come. Makes me feel good.

I no longer eat any of the bars I used to when younger, and any left over canā€™t be saved, so I only shop for hard candy and only eat my Green & Blackā€™s organic dark chocolate. Last time I tried some Hershey, it tasted just like paraffin (no chocolate). I would not consider buying any that does not state cocoa content of over 60% (and that is the ginger flavor).
