i remember the long stick! i think almost everyone found 1 to use when buttons replaced the turn dials. it was finally replaced with the first remote controls, which were attached to the tv with a long cable

I was also my dad’s remote. Plus we didn’t get a color set until 1971.

A long stick would not have worked for any of the early TV sets I remember. They all had a dial that “snapped” into position for each channel. They inevitably broke at some point – and then you changed channels using a pair of pliers.
I do remember buying a TV with a remote – that was connected by a wire. That too eventually stopped working correctly.
Not everything has gotten better over the years – but I prefer my TV today over any of those older models.

They had clickers back in the 60s unless you had an RCA where the remote didn’t click.
Because the first TVs were mechanical (spinning wheel) with resolutions around 39 lines the first electronic TV demonstrated in 1939 (World’s Fair) having 525 lines was rightly billed as “High Definition TV” YES, HDTV was first publicly demonstrated in 1939.
