If you didn’t happen to read my replies to your question about the 16 inch rifles on the battleships, it’s at the end of yesterday’s comments so you might want to go back and read them.

The new artist/writers have done such a great job of it that you can’t even tell that the late Reg Smythe is no longer working on Andy Capp

“Rifle” refers to the fact that the barrels have spiral grooves (rifling) cut in them to spin the projectile rapidly so it becomes a “gyroscope” and is more accurate in flight than a non spun projectile. It isn’t that most of them are shoulder arms.

The “Brown Bess Musket” wasn’t rifled and that’s one of the reasons why the Brits lost the American Revolution. Our boys with Kentucky rifles (hunting guns) could pick the Brits off at a greater distance then their muskets were even remotely accurate at.

By the same token, muzzle loading ship’s cannons of old times weren’t rifled or very accurate either.

I am warm, so long as I am inside. I will be going out soon. The hub is not the problem. I bought it to relieve congestion at the computer ports, much like an extension cord gives you extra places to hang plugs. Reading the boys and your links here are all the old A.C. reprints I need. As Number Three says, have a rest, then take some time out of your routine to do something different. Rediscover yourself. I try to do that every now and again – it’s a bit like rebooting your brain. Now I don’t have such a big downer on myself.
