Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for November 16, 2012
Transcript:
I wish you could be out teacher permanently, Mr. Corey. That's kind of you to say. You're way better than Mr. Staples. Oh, I doubt that. It's true! He can't draw awesome cartoons like you can! He can't draw anything! Yet somehow, against all odds, he's become a successful educator. The guy can't even make a decent pie chart!

Nate, there’s a difference between drawing a pie chart and explaining it. The right way.

Yet somehow Mr Staples is out on sick leave with a bleeding ulcer and migraine and a case of chalkboard cross eyes caused by these snot nosed little kids.

Dear Mr Peirce, What I meant yesterday about the cameo/collab, is that if they’re SEPERATE books! Like my character is in his and his is in mine. Sorry for bad explaining. Is that still publishable and not copying?

If you write something, you own the copyright to it. If your friend writes something he owns the copyright to it. If you say he can use your character, that’s your right to allow it. If he says you can use his character, that’s his right to allow it. You can allow anyone you want to use your copyrighted stuff; that’s referred to as a “license” to use. It’s your stuff, you can license its use any way you please (unless you sell the copyright or did the writing as a “work for hire” for somebody else, in which case they own the copyright). That’s the whole point of copyright. It’s yours, nobody can use it unless you say so (give them a license to use it).
There are a lot of commonly used licenses; Google is your friend. “Public domain” means you give it away to the “public”, and anybody can do whatever they want with it, including putting their own name on it and selling it (although that’s not very nice!) “Creative Commons” licenses are various licenses to use stuff but with some limitations; you don’t give up original ownership.
If you really have a question about copyright, then see a lawyer that specializes in copyright law. If you don’t do it right, some sleazeball can quite legally just rip it off and say it’s his.
