Old couple went to a travel agent (back in the days before the web) and asked the agent to book them a trip to Rome with a rental car. Agent said they’d be better off with a guided tour; but they wanted the car. A few weeks later, so the agent told Readers’ Digest, the couple was back to pick up their tickets and such. The agent said he booked their car, but he still thought they’d be better off with a guided tour. “Oh, that’s OK,” the old man told him, “we’ve been at the amusement park the last few weeks practicing on the bumper cars.”

In ancient Rome, there was a law that no wheeled vehicles could be in the streets between the hours of sunrise and sunset. That way pedestrians, and maybe people on horseback, had the streets to themselves in the daytime. But you have to figure that it was hard to sleep at night in the city, since wheels were either wood or shod with metal, and the streets were cobblestone, and all the wheeled traffic ran from sunset to sunrise.
