Transcript:
Janis: We're always looking for movies to watch!
Janis: You know, it isn't just movies we get with our subscription!
Janis: We get all these old TV shows that we never watched!
Arlo: When they were free.
TV (and radio) has never been “free” – only the reception of it is. You did (and still do) pay in the form of what were originally and accurately called “messages of commerce and industry”, which was shortened to “commercials”.
Come to think of it, there was a lot of creativity and “proper” English then – even in the commercials. As witness, copies of the old kinescopes of the Ernie Kovacs show include the LIVE Dutch Masters bits – but Kovacs was a genius….
Wild Wild West, Bonanza, Branded, The Rifleman, The Guns of Will Sonnett. Some of the free stuff on the over the air retro channels. Some of the best stuff on today…

I don’t think it’s gotten any worse, though. We remember only the good shows from the past while forgetting that Sturgeon’s Law goes back to 1958.

The TV series of the 50’s 60’s and early 70’s are the best.
