Well, they were bred as hunting dogs. I saw a Basset artésien the other day – the French working type – lean, fit, and capable of going above a lollop. I think Fred is more like these than the current show basset type.
Contrast that with dogs that compete in working dog and/or hunting dog trials. ( Border Collies, :Labrador Retrievers, etc. ) These are dogs bred for performance, not looks. so you better beileve they’re in good physical shape
I’ve always wondered what will happen to these poor animals, dogs or horses, that are bred just for show when the current fads change. Many of them are bred strictly for shows and are not really suited to do anything.

That’s why I’ve always had a mixed breed. They may have some problems, but not like the pure breeds.
