Clearly, Nelson knows about died hair — he’s looking for the evidence. Not sure he’s totally buying Grampa’s story. He’ll be watching the roots …
I was waiting for “the other places” question to come up, but then I realized that Crane knows his characters: Nelson is an only child and so does not have older brothers or sisters who may have reached puberty and being too young in school also for such topics to have been explored with classmates, his opportunities to know about hair in other places is probably very tiny or non-existent. And so it does not come up in this conversation with his Grandpa. But I agree with earlier posters, that Nelson DOES seem to know something might be up or all the evidence is not really adding up to the sum of what Grandpa is claiming. And so it’s always fun to watch Earl try to wiggle out of the corner into which he had painted himself.

Ah yes, when hair grows in places it shouldn’t but not where you need it.

I’d call bogus on this but I know so many guys who shave their heads bald for a look so the wise old man white hair look isn’t that silly. :-)
