Hey, hey … snicker all you want, but dung beetles are cool! Just because they’re not the “one percenters” of the insect kingdom like butterflies is no reason to look down your noses at them.. If it weren’t for dung beetles and maggots and other unglamorous creatures frolicking in dung and corpses and doing their thing, we’d be up to our hips in you-know-what. The ancient Egyptians valued scarabs, you know. .I think Hilburn owes an apology here!

Thank you for your kind reply..Some of my finest acquaintances have been dung beetles. They are kind, gentle creatures, and they work hard and long for low wages – in fact, no wages at all. .If their ethnic food preferences offend anybody, that is too bad. They live, laugh – and yes, love – in the milieu of their culture, an ancient culture of great richness and complexity..I am glad that you and your fellows have merged so well into modern society. Perhaps the newest generations of grubs are fortunate in that regard..However please understand that in talking to the class of beetles in my city, they encounter mockery and disdain on a daily basis. I thought that today’s cartoon was an unfortunate perpetuation of that attitude..So I still think Hilburn owes an apology here! As do many of you others making snide remarks intended to be humorous. .Well, have your ha-ha’s! I make laugh at you. I make yolk on you! Sons of guns, I think I punch you in all your noses that you turn up at my friends, the dung beetles!.Sorry, got carried away. Have a nice day.
