I thought this strip was called “New Adventures of Queen Victoria” not “New Adventures of Bin Laden, with a token cameo by Queen Victoria.” What’s this obsession with Bin Laden about?
I would think that “Melrose Place” loses some of its appeal when it’s main characters are fully covered women and bearded men who study religious texts and bomb-recipes all day.
debra4life50: Satire and commentary are some of the true bases of this strip.
If that’s not to your taste, may i direct you to Overboard {http://gocomics.com/overboard}?
debra4life50: I discuss this, believe it or not, in “We Are Not Amusing.” I’ll give a brief recap here.
Back in 2003, I did a quick, crappy gag website called “Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden?” (It’s still online at http://cnx.com/osama/ for those who are curious.) In 2006, needing to fill a week quickly, I stole some of that website for a week’s worth of strips that I left out of the book for rights reasons.
Someone E-Mailed me hate mail about that week, wondering what Osama himself would think. Never one to disregard hate mail, I jumped on the bandwagon. I decided to set up Osama as an occasional inept nemesis for Victoria.
He ran against her in a primary election. He pretended to be the head of the syndicate and cancel her comic due to low ratings. He masqueraded as her dentist. I’ve been using him as a Wile E. Coyote type: a moron who thinks he’s a genius, and who is the most inept villain you’re likely to meet.
Osama’s been in the official cast list at http://www.newadventuresofqueenvictoria.com/cast.php for quite some time. Osama masquerading as the Blue Boy was one of the images on the banners the week that TNAOQV launched at GoComics. I don’t use him often, but when the right storyline comes through I can’t resist.
Osama’s character gets me the second largest volume of hate mail. Mary gets the first. Like Jubal Harshaw, I use all but the most entertaining hate mail to insulate the root cellar. The rest gets used in the strip when I can.
This story is only going to last a week, then he’ll probably be gone for a while again, until the right story comes along. That’s the great thing about this strip: just wait until Monday and everything will change.
And a quick trivia note: when you see the character of Osama in a blue suit, the body I used with his head is that of Canadian Prime Monster Stephen Harper.
OK, so I was really bored at lunch and ran a few things through an anagram generator, here’s some of the better ones:
Osama Bin Laden=Bananas Idol Me
Queen Victoria=Quainter Voice
Pab Sungenis=Penguin’s Abs, Bunnies gasp!
Melrose Place=Eel sperm cola, repel O.C. males
Pab - thanks for explaining. I haven’t been reading your comic long enough to have seen all those other times. I like that “inept nemesis” role you have him in. Go for it, honey. You’ve convinced me.
debra4life50: No problem. I love being able to communicate with my readers like this, and am happy to explain the inside jokes when needed. Especially people, like you, who lodge their complaints and concerns in thoughtful, articulate form instead of just E-screaming.
Heavenly: Yes, I get the most hate mail when I use Mary.

Pab!!! You’re a Heinlein reader! I knew there was something I liked about you. Besides all the talent, and that other thing, of course.
