I think it’s merely a shortening of “pocket watch” and “wristwatch.”What I really want to know is how baseball arrived at the unimaginative, potentially confusing term “ball” for when the pitch goes outside the batting zone. Surely they had a better name once upon a time, but my research has come up short.
