Teacher: Mr. Fox, about your homework... I assigned questions 1 through 20, yet you only did questions 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20. Peter: I figured you could plot my results, find the best-fitting curve, and extrapolate how I'd do on the others. Teacher: I can't decide if you're stupid or brilliant, Peter. Peter: You could split the difference and give me a "B"...

wouldn’t the difference be a C mid point grade?

Well, there’s lazy, and then there’s THAT. Peter’s dreaming if he thinks that that shoddy level of effort would put him in even the same universe as a B!
wcorvi almost 12 years ago
Actually stupid – his plan would be interpolating the others. If he had done 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 – then the rest would be extrapolated.

Did this teacher use the “S” word? That could get him fired in the real world for damaging the student’s self-esteem.

Not anymore.

I tried something very close to this in my calculas class once. Didn’t work for me either… =(

How about we leave off the top curve of that “B” and remove the entire bottom part of the curve?

Let’s put aside, for the moment, that different questions assess different things. Homework is usually at least as much about practice as it is assessment. Besides, in a lot of textbooks, 1-20 is already just a small sample of the questions. Seems silly to take a sample of a sample.

Split the difference between 0 and 100. That’ll show him.
