I worked with a guy like that. Though a professor, he played the Desi Arnaz stupid-cuban stereotype for all it was worth, incomprehensible accent and all. Truth? He knew if people thought of him as “That nice Dr X…good guy, but on another planet” he wouldn’t be asked to do extra stuff he didn’t want to do. I once overheard him talking to his daughter on the phone in his office, when he thought he was unobserved. His English was perfect, and he sounded like a born Midwesterner, though he’d never been there before age 40.
