if you are a band geek long enough and learn to play even a little, you too can get paid very little working in bars and have women take you home to take care of you
Until the government in its wisdom decided that smoking was the worst thing anybody could possibly do, most musicians smoked. Including wind and brass players.
I started playing flute when I was forty. I was a three pack a day smoker, and I naively thought it would help me cut down if not quit altogether. It didnât happen. My instructor never brought it up â though if the anti-smoking ââexperts" are anything to go by, he must have known.
I did two years of flute, after which time I was playing the music I liked âcompetentlyâ (according to my retired head of the woodwinds department in a major university instructor), and certainly recognizably.
There is no doubt that smoking tobacco is bad for your lungs, but itâs not the boogeyman we have been told it is. Itâs just one more effort to micro manage our lives. If they cared at all about public health, theyâd clean up the food and water supply.

Uncle Phil asked for it. And, if Mike were older there are a ton of bad jokes that could be said about Philâs comment.
