Clayton: Seriously, dad. Is there a way to get filthy rich without actually earning it?
Adam: Well...hmm...I think I can help a bit.
Clayton: Awesome!
Adam: I'll need the good hose and some mud.
@Ji2m Adam says he’ll help out a bit — I assume that means if he gets a hose and some mud he’ll help Clayton take care of the “filthy” part in “filthy rich”
I can understand how the joke could be missed, but I agree that Adam’s intent is to “help a bit” by making Clayton filthy. Had his line in the second panel been something like “I can get you halfway there”, it perhaps would have been clearer.
Not everything needs to be “1-2-3”, though. If the last panel had made the gag explicit (“…then you’ll be FILTHY!!!”) rather than implicit, you might as well have Clayton do a boffo backflop, with his feet in the air and a big exclamation point over his head (the comic strip equivalent of a sit-com laugh track). That would be good enough for Bazooka Joe, but from Adam Newman we expect more…
A “job” is not the way to get filthy rich. It’s better to be an owner than an employee. (Learning how to legally hide money from the Taxman helps).
The above is based on hearsay, and not any actual experience of my own.
