My neighbourhood grocery store charges a refundable $.25 deposit for carts, as do many other area stores (one actually charges a $1.00 deposit, which is a pain if you don’t happen to have a dollar coin on you.) But they go a step further, in that their entire parking lot is surrounded by a magnetic field, and anyone who attempts to entice a cart to stray from the herd, as it were, winds up with the wheels on the cart locked up. It’s a rough neighbourhood - I guess it’s not safe for the cartherds to stray too far from the flock.
Oh, the wiggly wheeled ones. I have a knack to attract those. If you see a guy going whippity-whip-whip-whippity-whip-whip with a cart in a store, that would be me.

I am also associated with carts, just a different appication. I, you see, am a cartographer.

I always get the cart with the flat wheel and it leans to one side.

I like the way Bill Cosby one described the wobbly wheel on a gurney as “having a miniature windstorm down there”.

Paying people to drive around and pick up stray carts got expensive enough to justify the expense of an “invisible fence”.
