Looked this up, on Wikipedia, so it wasn’t exactly deep research:
The French army at the time was on a roll… no losses for many years. The Mexicans were outnumbered and not well supplied. The victory was significant and had an impact on the American Civil war as the French were supportive of the Confederacy.
They never mention the second battle of Puebla, France ended up capturing Mexico City. But the French and the conservatives, Mexico’s traitors who supported the French army and their phony Austrian Emperor, were defeated using only guerrilla warfare tactics.
